Convoy Attacks Kill 2 U.S. Troops in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ Two American soldiers were killed in separate attacks on their convoys late Sunday and early Monday morning in the Iraqi capital, the military said. The first soldier died in a firefight late Sunday after two armed assailants opened fire, said Sgt. Patrick Compton, a spokesman for the military. The soldiers opened fire, killing one of the attackers and wounding the other. The wounded suspect was taken into custody.
Firefighters Move to Hills Above Tucsson
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ Officials urged residents and guests of a desert resort to evacuate an exclusive enclave on the city's northern fringe Sunday after a wildfire sped downhill, surprising firefighters and threatening about 200 homes. The area, called Ventana Canyon, is a high desert enclave in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. It includes upscale homes and the 400-room Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, said George Heaney, a bureau chief with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Israel Agrees to Release Palestinians

JERUSALEM (AP) _ Israel took a step toward meeting a key Palestinian demand by agreeing Sunday to release some of the 5,000 prisoners it holds, but Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the limited move will be conditioned on the Palestinians dismantling militant groups. The release aims to strengthen the rule of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, who has vowed to carry out the U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan.
Taylor Accepts Nigerian Asylum Offer

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) _ Embattled President Charles Taylor accepted an offer of asylum in Nigeria on Sunday, but gave no timeframe for quitting power and insisted the transition must be orderly. He urged the United States to send peacekeepers. The calls by Taylor and Nigeria's leader for a peaceful transition increase pressure on President Bush to send U.S. troops to Liberia to enforce a cease-fire in the war-torn nation. Bush heads to Africa on Monday for visits to five nations _ including Nigeria, the top powerbroker in West Africa.
Police Arrest Trio in Random Attack Plot
OAKLYN, N.J. (AP) _ Three teenagers arrested Sunday with a cache of guns, knives and swords planned to target people they considered enemies, then carry out random attacks, police said. The teens were taken into custody about 4 a.m. in Oaklyn, a Philadelphia suburb, after a driver reported a carjacking attempt.
Bryant Surrenders on Sex-Assault Charge

DENVER (AP) _ Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant turned himself in to police and posted a $25,000 bond on a felony count of sexual assault, the Eagle County sheriff's office said Sunday. The 24-year-old All-Star guard was released after turning himself in on Friday.
Sixth Drowned Swimmer Found in Lake Mich.
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) _ The bodies of two people who drowned along a three-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline were recovered Sunday, bringing to six the total number found dead in the choppy waters. A seventh swimmer who disappeared in the area at the same time Friday was still missing and presumed dead.
Study Challenges Video-Gamer Stereotype

CHICAGO (AP) _ Roughly two-thirds of college students play video games, but the image of a nerdy guy who spends all day in a dimly lit room blowing up computer-generated bad guys is off base, according to a new study. College gamers are not necessarily male _ or anti-social hermits. And while about a third of those surveyed admitted playing computer games during class, the games generally don't conflict with their studies, says the researcher who conducted the survey for the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
Terminator 3' Annihilates Competition
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" annihilated the competition, grossing $44 million in its first weekend and $72.5 million since opening Wednesday. Reese Witherspoon's "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde" debuted in second place with a $22.9 million weekend and $39.2 million since its Wednesday premiere.
Sorenstam Misses Women's Open Playoff

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. (AP) _ Annika Sorenstam was in the middle of the 18th fairway, 236 yards from the hole, one swing away from ending the U.S. Women's Open. The tournament only ended for her.
