Fed: AusAID seeks advice on destruction of West Bank project

The federal government's aid agency is seeking advice on the destruction of an Australian-fundedproject in the West Bank after bombing by Israeli troops.

Fire ripped through the Ma'an Development Centre, a beneficiary of AusAID funding,as a result of a bomb attack at Ramallah.

Authorities confirmed no Australians had been working at the centre.

Former United Nations consultant and aid worker HELEN MCKEW says the full extent ofthe damage could not be assessed because the director of the centre, SAMI KHADER, is notallowed to leave his house.

A spokesman for AusAID confirmed it financially supported the Ma'an Development Centrefor women's and agricultural development projects.

Dr MCKEW says the building was bombed by the Israelis and they didn't allow any firetrucks to go through.

The AusAID spokesman says the agency is seeking further information but is confidentDr MCKEW'S advice is correct.
